Top 10 Online Threats To Your Website

The strategies hackers use to break into your site can be complicated but the results are usually pretty simple – lost revenue. Here are the 10 most common threats identified by the Open Web Application Security Project:

Protect Your Website With Website Security
1. Injection.

It’s not uncommon for web applications to have injection flaws, especially SQL injection flaws. A hacker who finds one will send malicious data as part of a command or query. The attacker’s message tricks the app into changing data or executing a command it was not designed to obey.

2. Cross-site Scripting.

Cross-site Scripting flaws occur whenever an application sends user-supplied data to a web browser without validating it first. Hackers use these flaws to hijack users away from the site or deface it, thereby costing the site owner in lost business.

3. Insecure Direct Object References.

Applications that lack checks to verify a user is authorized to view particular content can be manipulated to access private data.

4. Broken Authentication.

When account credentials and session tokens aren’t properly protected, hackers can assume users’ identities online.

5. Cross-site Request Forgery (CSRF).

A CSRF attack tricks unknowing site visitors into submitting forged HTTP requests via image tags, XSS, or other techniques. If the user is logged in, the attack succeeds.

6. Security Misconfiguration.

Security misconfiguration flaws give hackers unauthorized access to system data via default accounts, unused pages, unpatched flaws, unprotected files and directories.

7. Insecure Cryptographic Storage.

Many web applications don’t do enough to protect sensitive data such as credit card numbers, Social Security numbers and login credentials . Thieves may use this data for identity theft, credit card fraud or other crimes.

8. Failure to Restrict URL Access.

Often an app will protect sensitive interactions by not showing links or URLs to unauthorized users. Attackers use this weakness to access those URLs directly in order to carry out unauthorized actions.

9. Insufficient Transport Layer Protection.

Applications often fail to authenticate, encrypt and protect the confidentiality of network traffic. Some use weak algorithms, expired or invalid certificates or use them incorrectly. This allows hackers to “eavesdrop” on online exchanges. An SSL Certificate typically neutralizes this threat.

10. Invalidated Redirects & Forwards.

Web applications often redirect or forward legitimate users to other pages and websites, using insecure data to determine the destination. Attackers use this weakness to redirect victims to phishing or malware sites, or use forwards to open private pages.

Choosing The Perfect Domain Name

If you plan to register a Domain Name and build a Website to earn cash from it, then you may want to read this for sure. The first part of making a Website is choosing the Domain Name you will go with: if your domain name is somehow “poor”, you will most likely get very low traffic (visitors) to your site. Here you will get some basic information and advice about how to choose the right domain name for your business…

Choosing the best domain name

Using Common Domain Endings

This can be good or bad for you. Common domain endings (CDE) means using domain endings such as: www xyzpal com or www xyztube com or something like that, where xyz is a word or a few words related to your niche. Here are some examples:

xyztube.com

xyzpal.com

xyzwire.com

xyzbay.com

xyzspace.com

and many more…

Downsides:

Your visitors will remember the original site. For example, lets say you have designed a video streaming site, and you choose to name it xyztube.com, then people will remember youtube, and simply go to youtube instead. I.e. dailymotion.com was smart choice, that is a good domain name and it has no relevance to youtube, because you don’t want to remind your traffic who your competition is. By choosing a name that ends with “tube”, you are indeed advertising YouTube.

Your visitors will also think that your site is a clone site that is nothing more than a “wanna-be.” That is bad for your site’s reputation. If your site happens to be better than the competition, let’s take the YouTube example, your might get sued for Copyright Infringement. Too much work and effort for nothing. Don’t choose a domain that is so much of a “carbon copy”.

Upsides:

If your copying isn’t that bad, then you will take a shortcut to front pages, easily become popular and get hight traffic, because it makes it easy for your visitors to remember the domain name that you have chosen.

Take LimeWire for example, a quite popular site and application. If you registar a domain names such as spankwire.com, then you can build a XXX website, and there you have it, two famous and really easy to remember site names. Spankwire copied the whole “wire” DME and still were able to become popular.

Search Keywords as part of your Domain Name.

Many people think that having keywords as part of a domain name is the best option to get top positions in search engines, but it doesn’t work for all domains names.

Upsides:

Using Keywords will make it really easy to have a good PR (Page Rank) and come up high in the list of the first page of search engines. That could never be bad in any way.

Keywords also help your visitors remember you WebSite name. If you are looking for domains hot deals , then guess what: you go to domainshotdeals.com, duh!

Downsides:

Keywords often end up making a site’s domain name really long. Eight is a good number of characters to have in your domain, at max. However, as we see with domainshotdeals.com, the domain name exceeds 8 characters. Because of this, visitors may choose other sites that have the same niche but different and smaller domain names, like domains.com, for example (unfortunately this domain name is already registered).

Keywords also seem to make site’s dull. For example, when you want to search for something regardless of where you usually search, you definitly don’t go to search.com do you? Or in other examples, if your searching for a proxy to use, you don’t just go to proxy.com, as its probably filtered on the PC anyways.

A common mistake when picking a domain with keywords is registering those that have keywords with dashes: www xxx-yyy-zzz com with xxx, yyy, and zzz being three different keywords with -‘s in between (i.e domains-hot-deals-com). These kinds of sites show up quick in search engines, but again, no one is going too type that s..t in, people will choose a site with a smaller name in the same niche.

Domain Name Extensions (Top Level Domains, Country Code Top Level Domains)

TLD stands for top level domain. The gTLD is a generic top level domain, which are domain names ending with a .info, .org, .net, etc. A ccTLD is a country code top level domain, which are domain names ending with a .in (India), .us (USA), .it (ITALY), etc.

Choosing a gTLD is best, but one can never say when it is best. This is a very complicated part of choosing a domain name, so please consider the following: Dot info If your website will be all about information is the best choice. If you are designing a website that provides information on how to build a website, then you may go with www creatingwebsites info, which completely makes sense. A .info domain name is often associated with proxy sites as well.

Dot com Do you think that there’ s no way of going wrong with a .com domain name? You know what? There is. Often people choose .com domain names that are really lengthy because thats all what’s left available and not registered with .com’s: long domain names. Don’t choose a domain name with more than 8 letters unless it really works well.

Dot net This is often a second choice if the domain name you want is not available with .com. However you have to be careful. Remember, you dont want a domain name that will remind people of other more famous websites, especially if you share the same niche. So lets say youtube.net is available, and you want to make a site like YouTube, then you would be making a huge mistake, because why would visitors go to youtube.net when they can just go to youtube.com ?

Dot org This is the best TLD for Websites that belong to Organizations, but again, dont make the same mistake as mentioned for .net .

Dot ccTLD Choosing a kind of country code TLD does not mean a lot. It is many times used in Cybersquatting (Cybersquatting, also known as domain squatting, according to the United States federal law known as the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, is registering, trafficking in, or using a domain name with bad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else. The cybersquatter then offers to sell the domain to the person or company who owns a trademark contained within the name at an inflated price. However, there are very popular ccTLD’s registered: good examples are del.icio.us and www wis dm. Both use the TLD at the end to make a word. This also allows visitors to easlily remember domain names. ccTLD’s can be more expensive than traditional TLD’s.
